Open House for TBR Students and Families – Meet the Teacher
Thomas B. Riley School will be holding an in-person Open House for Meet the Teacher night on Thursday September 24, 2026 from 5:00pm-7:00pm at the school.
Grade team presentation for Grades 7, 8, and 9 will begin at 5:00pm. Other presentations from CTF teams and Phys. Ed will be held throughout the evening as well. See schedule below for specific presentation times and locations.
This is a “come and go” style open house where you can pop into the various presentations throughout the evening and stay to ask questions or speak to the teachers in between each time slot.
Schedule for the Evening:
5:00pm, 6:15pm - Grade Team Presentations (repeat presentation)
Location: Learning Commons (Grade 7)
Location: Room 16 – Upstairs (Grade 8)
Location: Room 8 - Downstairs (Grade 9)
5:30pm – CTF/Complementary Courses Presentation (Cafeteria)
6:30pm – Phys. Ed Presentation (Main gym)
6:30pm-7:00pm – CTF teachers in the following space for a tour:
- Mr. Irwin (Band Room)
- Mr. Vlielander (Construction Room)
- Ms. Prasad (Foods Room)
ALP/PLP Program Open House Information
Students who are new to our Paced Learning Program (PLP) and Adapted Learning Program (ALP) are invited to book an individual conference with Ms. Bonnie and Ms. Osman between 5:00pm-6:15pm. Please RSVP to your child’s teacher to book a time if you are new to the program. If your child attends our PLP or ALP program and they are a returning student, families and students are invited to participate in the larger open house presentations up until 6:15pm and then Rooms 5 and 6 will be open for a drop-in visit and touch-base with the teacher between 6:15pm and 7:00pm.
Updating Demographic Information – OVERDUE
You will have received an email from CBE regarding updating your child’s demographic information in Powerschool. These forms used to be completed via paper copies and now are required to be completed annually online. All parents must review, complete or update their child’s forms through Powerschool by clicking on the School Engage tab.
This is now an overdue task. Please ensure it is done urgently. Otherwise our school staff will be following up directly with families.
Participation in Provincial Curriculum Pilot:
We are pleased to share that Thomas B. Riley will participate in the provincial pilot of the draft Grade 7-9 curriculum during the 2026–27 school year.
Alberta Education and Childcare is offering schools the opportunity to pilot draft Grade 7–9 curriculum during the 2026–27 school year, ahead of mandatory provincial implementation in 2027–28. All Grades 7-9 students at Thomas B. Riley will participate in the classroom pilot as part of their regular learning in Grades 7 and 9 Math and Social Studies, Grade 8 Math, and Grades 7-9 PE and Wellness. Through this process, teachers will be able to provide feedback to Alberta Education and Childcare to help inform final refinements to the curriculum.
Students will learn and be assessed using the identified draft learning outcomes. Teachers will continue to monitor student progress, respond to individual learning needs, and communicate with families as they normally would. Teachers participating in the pilot will also receive professional learning, collaborative planning and networking opportunities, ongoing guidance from CBE system specialists, and access to resources and supports through new LearnAlberta.
For Grade 9 Mathematics or Social Studies only: Because your child’s class is participating in the draft Grade 9 Mathematics/Social Studies curriculum pilot, students will not write the Provincial Achievement Test in these subjects during the 2026–27 school year. Their learning will continue to be assessed by their classroom teacher and reflected in regular reporting. We will share further information with families as it becomes available.
Most families will notice little or no change to their child’s report card as a result of this pilot. Teachers will continue to assess student learning and communicate progress through the regular reporting processes.

WE NEED YOUR HELP! If you are interested and able to volunteer, please pick a shift. No experience necessary; paid casino advisors will be there with us, all day, and teach us everything we need to know. Easy peasy work and fun!
If you are a night owl and able to work evenings and stay awake past 10pm…even better! Please grab a PM shift.
If you have a friend or family member that you’d like to work a shift with, signup for two shifts. You will just need to put their email address and their phone number in.
This is by far, the biggest fundraiser that TBR will have. We are only granted a casino by AGLC, once every 18 - 24 months. Our last casino was in 2023! TBR will receive between $70,000 - $80,000 from this one, two day event. To put that into perspective, a regular ‘good’ fundraiser raises less than $1,000.
One note - if you are able to work both days, it has to be the same job. You cannot signup for Banker one day and Count Room Staff the next day.

Payment can be made by cheque payable to the "TB Riley PAC Association", cash to the main office in a secure envelope labeled with the student's name and "Apple Fundraiser", or by e-transfer to TBRileycouncil@gmail.com (please indicate the password on the front of your order form).
