- willingness to adhere to uniform regulations
Characteristics of Traditional Learning Centre Program
- Gradual release of responsibility is the primary method of instruction (I do it, We do it, You do it together, You do it alone)
- Flexible groupings to personalize and differentiate instruction
- A respect for self, others and the environment in and through character education
- French as a Second Language is mandatory from Grades 1 to 9
- Music is mandatory kindergarten through Grade 6
- Band will be offered as a complimentary course in Grade 7 to 9
- Student learning is shared in ways determined by the school, which may include assemblies, celebrations of learning, parent information nights, etc.
- Kindergarten to Grade 4 students are in cohorts by grade
- Grade 5 to 9 students are in cohorts by grade
- Homework expectations are in place for kindergarten to Grade 9 and are determined by the school and CBE Administrative Regulation 3066
- Mandatory school uniform
- The TLC program ends in Grade 9

Speak with the principal at your designated TLC school for specific information. The classroom teacher, along with the school administration, makes decisions about individual student's learning.

Traditional Learning Centre Commitment to Excellence
This section contains the commitments for students, staff and parents that all TLC students and parents have agreed to in their TLC application.
School Commitment
- Set High expectations for student achievement
- Provide structure and teacher-directed whole group instruction to ensure success
- Model respectful, positive, professional behaviour in working with students and parents
- Make contact with home
- Contact parents through phone and e-mail when needed, and be available for appointments as needed
- Reinforce Character Education throughout the program
Parent Commitment
- Provide a quiet work place for nightly homework
- Make homework a priority and regularly check the agenda and/or other school communications
- Reinforce virtues at home
- Expand the child’s education through the family wherever possible
- Encourage high achievement in all subject areas
- Support the delivery of the program primarily by whole group instruction
- Support the staff and administration in their efforts to maintain an orderly, disciplined, safe and caring school environment
- Attend parent/teacher conferences as scheduled
- Ensure that your child is respecting the school dress code
Student Commitment
- Demonstrate respect, responsibility and other virtues in daily conduct
- Listen to and cooperate with all staff members
- Participate in all activities and school community service as appropriate
- Display a positive attitude with everyone in and around the school
- Complete assignments and homework; always aim for excellence
- Respect and follow the TLC dress code
TLC Students:
- You will need both a formal uniform to the worn every Monday and for special occasions and assemblies, and a regular uniform to be worn Tuesday-Thursday every week. School hoodies are not permitted to be worn in place of the uniform next year.
- Beginning in the 2024-25 school year, students in TLC may wear casual every Friday. School hoodies and other school spirit wear may also be worn during Fridays only.
- To pick up your uniform, please visit McCarthy's Calgary Store and tell them that you attend Thomas B. Riley School. They will ensure you have every piece you need.
