What's Happening @TBR - Week of October 23-27, 2023
Dear Thomas B. Riley Families,
Communication Protocol
It is important for parents and guardians to partner with our staff at the school for each child’s success. If you have any questions or concerns, please be sure to address these first with the source directly connected to the problem, namely your child’s teacher, as they are in the best position to affect change.
If you have a question or concern about something that has happened in a particular class, please direct your inquiries to that individual teacher. If your question or concern affects your child’s learning in a more global sense, please reach out to your child’s homeroom or core teachers (Humanities or Math/Sci).
After you have made an attempt to resolve the identified challenge with your child’s teacher, and if you remain unsatisfied with the response, then please reach out to school administration at this time.
Thank you for your attention to this communication protocol as it will help us to streamline our communication at the office, and allow us to respond in a timely manner to all families.
A list of our staff email addresses can be found on our school website: Thomas B. Riley School (cbe.ab.ca)
Physical Altercations and Racism
The school as a whole has noticed an increased pattern of behaviour regarding physical altercations, fighting, as well as racial slurs and gestures from many of our students. This behaviour is of significant concern to staff and we are taking immediate and serious action to address this moving forward.
This morning all students were spoken to during our announcement block about the expectations moving forward regarding our student code of conduct and creating a welcoming, caring, safe, and respectful working and learning environment.
It is imperative that students understand that their actions significantly affect the overall culture of our school and that the school will be taking progressive discipline measures which may include suspension (in or out of school) or contacting police depending on the severity of the incident and/or repeated offenses.
The age of responsibility in Canada is 12. Students need to understand that their actions may result in criminal charges for physical assault, hate crimes, uttering threats, harassment, discrimination, and cyber crimes including cyberbullying.
Age of Responsibility in Canada: Criminal Code (justice.gc.ca)
It is important parents understand that even if these actions happen outside of school hours, if they affect the environment within the school, students are still acting outside of their student code of conduct. Thank you for your support in having conversations with your child regarding this message as a follow up.
Please encourage your child to report all incidents named above directly to school administration for follow-up.
Individual Program Plans and Student Support Plans
If your child is on an individual program plan, these will be going home today in a sealed envelope. This is a working document and your feedback is important and appreciated. If there are any adjustments or if you would like to provide further input, please connect directly with your child’s homeroom teacher.
If your child is on a Student Support Plan, these documents will also be going home this week.
Please ensure that these documents have your signature and are returned to the school as soon as possible.
Transportation Reminder
Due to the inclement weather set to arrive this week it is more important than ever to track the progress of your child’s bus if there are any delays. You can do this by logging into my bus stop.ca https://www.mybusstop.ca/ with the log in code CBE1KZKMQ or My school bus monitor https://www.myschoolbusmonitor...
If you are having any trouble with the bus or have any questions please call Southland bus service at 403 726 5963.
