What's Happening @TBR - Week of November 20, 2023

Dear Thomas B. Riley Families,

We have a busy week ahead and plenty of information to share with you below.

School Conference Bookings – Now Open!

We invite you to join us for school conferences this week and we are looking forward to the opportunity to share with you insights and celebrations of your child’s learning this year so far.

Please bring your child with you to these conferences so they can participate in the conversation. We ask that you please leave younger children, or children who do not attend our school at home, both for capacity reasons in our school gymnasium and so we can have a focused conversation about our students at TBR.

All conferences will be held in person in the school gymnasium. Please prioritize booking in individual time slots with each core teacher. Phys Ed, Music/Band, French, and CTF teachers are also available for booking. Mr. Stanley is unfortunately unavailable for these conferences, so please contact him directly via email if you wish to set up an alternate time to meet. Mrs. Cook and Mrs. Roefs are also on medical leave and will not be able to attend.

If your child is in the ALP or PLP program please ensure you are choosing the correct drop down menu. Your conferences will also be held in the gymnasium.

Conference Schedule:

Thursday November 23 – 3:30pm-8:30pm

Friday November 24 – 8:00am-1:00pm

Location: School Gymnasium

Timing: 10 minute time slots per subject/teacher

Booking Instructions: Log into your Powerschool Account. Click on Conference Bookings. Choose the correct conference from the drop down menu (Grade 7-9 or ALP/PLP). Choose your child’s name and the time you would like to choose a conference and click submit.

No School Friday

Due to the conference schedule listed above, there is no school for students on Friday November 24.

Casual Day Thursday

Our Student Leadership representatives have recommended that as a school we have casual day on the days we have a Healthy Hunger fun lunch or fun snack. We listened and agreed that this was a great idea and another way to build community within our school. As we have a fun snack this Thursday, TLC students are invited to dress casually and wear hats if they choose. The expectation is that their clothing is still adherent to our Student Code of Conduct.

Optional Prayer Times at School

We understand that many of our students require a place to pray during the school day during this season of time. Students have been asked to come at a designated time that aligns with their religion’s prayer times calendar, understanding that this shifts slightly each day. This time will be communicated regularly with all students. This common time is to ensure there is adequate supervision by school staff and to minimize disruption to class time. Parents will receive an email from the school this week if your child is coming down to pray regularly in order to ensure you are aware they may be missing class time. If you have any questions or concerns please email the school office directly.

School Locker Locks

Students were provided with a lock at the beginning of the school year free of charge as long as it is returned to the school in June. If your child has misplaced their lock, they are required to pay the replacement cost which is $12. They will also not be able to use their locker until the lock is reimbursed. You will receive a communication from your child’s homeroom teacher if their lock is missing this week. We appreciate your support and prompt payment if this applies to your child. If your child’s lock is damaged, they must hand in their old lock in order to receive a new one. No outside locks that are not provided by the school are permissible.

Welcome to Mrs. Jennifer Pankrat

Mrs. Roefs is currently on medical leave with an expected return date in early February. We are happy to welcome Mrs. Jennifer Pankrat to our TBR family! She will be taking over Drama and Foods classes in Mrs. Roefs’ absence. Mrs. Pankrat is a familiar face at TBR and we are thrilled to have her with us on a more regular basis.

Lost and Found

There will be a lost and found table set up outside of the school gymnasium during school conferences this week. Please have a good look through with your child when you come into the school. All leftover items will be donated in the week following.

Grade 8 Field Trip

The Grade 8 students are attending a field trip to Bowness High for a magical performance put on by their students. It is a wonderful opportunity to build community with our feeder school and we are so fortunate they were able to fit us in for this special day. Students are aware that they will be walking to the school directly following lunch, and that their prompt return if they are off campus is required.

Hope you have a wonderful week ahead!

Sincerely,

Tiffany Austin
