What's Happening @TBR - Week of February 5, 2024
Dear Thomas B Riley Families,
Report Cards Viewable in PowerSchool – Feedback wanted
A reminder that Report Card marks and comments are now available in your PowerSchool Account.
The teachers in the school have spent a significant amount of time on comments this term to ensure your child’s comment is personalized, specific, and that it addresses their level of current achievement as well as their next steps in learning.
We would love to hear your feedback on the new format of comments this term. Please email your thoughts to Mrs. Austin at taaustin@cbe.ab.ca
Option Choices at School
Options are now finalized and viewable in PowerSchool. The administration has made every effort where possible to ensure that at least one of each student’s top three choices was honored for this final term. Please understand that option classes other than their top choice are based on space and availability. Our priority is to ensure no students repeat any options from their previous term and to keep class sizes for options at a balanced and reasonable size. Some students had to be moved options within the last week to accomplish this goal.
We are not accepting further requests for changes to options at this time.
Special Health Presentation Last Week
Students had the opportunity on Wednesday or Friday this past week to be part of a special Health presentation from a former police officer who started her own company called, “The Power of Humanity”. The presentation she gave the students was called “Delete Hate”.
You can learn more about the topics that were discussed on her website: Programs | Power Of Humanity (pohconsultinginc.com)
The students were actively engaged and learned a lot about pro-active approaches to addressing hate, discrimination, and racism in the community and at school.
Phone Policy at School
An important reminder for all parents that Thomas B Riley has a cell phone policy of “away for the day” in class. This means that cell phones must be stored in their locker and not come into the classroom unless they have express permission from their teacher for an exceptional reason. This is to protect student and staff privacy, maintain a productive learning environment, and ensure that students remain focused on their learning tasks while in the classroom. At this time, cell phones are permitted during the lunch break. We are asking for your support in this policy, as we will be following up directly with students and families if this policy is not followed. By working together, we can ensure all students are focused on their academic success during class time.
Student Count – Next Year
If your child will not be attending Thomas B Riley School next year in Grade 8 or 9, please email the office at thomasbriley@cbe.ab.ca as soon as possible. We will need to designate each student to the appropriate school in the Spring. In addition, an accurate projection of student numbers allows us to plan for the correct number of staff and has a significant impact on school resources. We appreciate your cooperation in letting us know in advance.
TLC Registration
Our TLC program is now open for registration. If you would like to register for TLC next year, please complete an expression of interest form through School Engage no later than February 12, 2024. Our school is not going through a lottery system this year, however, early registration will secure your registration. Enrollment in certain grades may be capped later in the Spring/Fall.

Volleyball Spectator Guidelines
All CBE middle schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect, and a positive experience for all.
They include:
- All visiting student spectators/athletes must be under the direct supervision of a parent/guardian for the duration of the games. Supervision requires the adult to be in the gymnasium where the sport is taking place.
- There are no in and out privileges for spectators. If you leave the building, you should not re-enter. Entry is through the front door only of the hosting school.
- Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building.
- All spectators - students or adults - are expected to cheer and support players/coaches/referees/parents/guardians in a positive manner. All are reminded that the referees must be treated with respect. Some of them are high school students who are gaining valuable experience. In addition our coaches are teachers who are volunteering their time to support our athletes and we could not make this happen without them!
- Disrespectful behaviours will be addressed by school administration promptly and may result in spectators being directed to leave the game and the school building.
- Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible at all times for their direct supervision. Please ensure that they are not wandering the halls and playing on physical education equipment in the gym/on stage. The stage in each school gymnasium is off limits.
- If students from TBR wish to stay for a home game, they must leave the school premises after school at 2:30pm and return no earlier than 3:45pm. There is no supervision for students and the school is not open for students to wait for the games to begin in between school ending and game start times.
These expectations have been reviewed with all of our students in school. Please review with your child as well. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support.
Good luck to our teams this week as they proudly represent TBR!
