Athletics Tryouts Have Begun!

To be able to try-out you must have your Athletic Try-out Form signed. For all Girls sports teams, the Fairness and Safety in Sport form must also be signed. All forms were provided by PE team on the first week of school.

All tryouts end at 3:45pm. Prompt pick up is required as this is an expectation if they make the team.

The following is the schedule for remaining tryouts:

Monday Sept. 15th:

Jr. Boys Basketball Try-Out #2 – 2:45pm-3:45pm

Tuesday Sept. 16th:

 Jr. Girls Basketball Try-Out #2 – 2:45pm-3:45pm

Spectator Reminders for Athletics

All CBE Middle Schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect and a positive experience for players, coaches, other spectators and the hosting school. The expectations are as follows:

  • Students must return home or be off school property in between the end of the school day at 2:30pm and game start time. There is no supervision at the school provided and students are not able to remain at school in between unless previously remained by the coach. Players who remain at the school must be under the direct supervision of the coach and not wandering in the school.
  • For all Home and Away games, students must have their personal parent or guardian accompany them to all games. They may not be supervised by someone who is not their parent/guardian. Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building immediately.
  • For soccer only, students may attend on their own with parent permission, however if they have even one warning by administration, coaches, or the refs for spectator misconduct they will be asked to leave immediately.
  • There are no in and out privileges for spectators for volleyball and basketball. If you leave the building you should not re-enter. Doors will be locked behind you automatically when you leave.
  • For basketball and volleyball, all visitors must enter our building through the main doors only. Entrance through an alternative door may trigger security protocols and result in significant consequences for students letting others in the school as this is a security breach.
  • All spectators are expected to cheer and support the players, coaches, referees, etc. in a positive manner.
  • Disrespectful behaviour from students or spectators will be addressed by the hosting school administration as well as your home school administration as a follow up. The student code of conduct applies at all times, even when off school property as school athletic events is an extension of the school. Spectators may be asked to leave the school and may not be allowed to return depending on the severity of the issue.
  • Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible for direct supervision at all times. The rest of the school is closed and off limits. Please ensure children are not in the hallways or playing on the stage or with any school equipment.

Thank you for your attention to this. Students have been informed as well today during announcements. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support and look forward to the best year yet for our athletics teams! GO RAVENS!

Gym Strip, Hoodies, and Hats

Both gym strip and hoodies will be available to purchase. Students can either check in at the office or parents can call the school to get the fee added to their PowerSchool account. Once the fee is paid, students will receive their items.

Open House – Meet the Teacher Evening

Thomas B. Riley School will be holding an in-person Open House for Meet the Teacher night on Thursday September 25, 2025 from 5:30pm-7:30pm at the school. We will announce more details in the next weekly message. Please reserve this date.

CTF Options

Thank you for your ongoing support of our school and programs. We would like to remind families that the CTF option schedule for this year has now been finalized, and no further changes can be made. While we understand that not every course will align perfectly with every student’s interests, the options provided reflect a balance of fine arts, technology, leadership, and career skills in line with the Alberta Program of Studies. We recognize that many families have inquired about switching options, and we appreciate the high level of interest. At this point, however, schedules are set, and we will continue moving forward with the programs in place to provide a balanced and engaging learning experience for all students. Thank you for your understanding.

Transportation Inquiries

We kindly remind families that all questions or concerns regarding bussing and transportation should be directed to cbetransportation@cbe.ab.ca. The school does not manage transportation scheduling or routing and will not be able to provide updates on these matters. For the most accurate and timely information, please contact the CBE Transportation team directly.

Updating Demographic Information – Due Sept 15

You will have received an email from CBE regarding updating your child’s demographic information in Powerschool. These forms used to be completed via paper copies and now are required to be completed annually online. All parents must review, complete or update their child’s forms through Powerschool by clicking on the School Engage tab.
