Dear Thomas B. Riley Families,
Open House for TBR Students and Families – Thank You
Thank you to the many families that came out to our first open house of the year. The teachers we able to connect with many of you and share the many exciting opportunities for learning that are coming up this year!
Our first sit-down conferences are October 24, 2024 and October 25, 2024.
Orange Shirt Day is Today!
Orange Shirt Day 2024 is Monday, September 30 however, we will be honouring this day on Tuesday, Oct. 1st, 2024 as we have the Terry Fox Run on Sept. 26th.
Students are invited to wear orange shirts today in honour of Orange Shirt Day. You can read more about Orange Shirt Day here.
Students will be engaging in learning experiences in their Humanities classes on October 1st throughout the day in recognition of this day.
Raven Game Day Club
All students are invited to join the Ravens Game Day Club (RGDC). This club will allow students with signed permission slips to return to TBR as spectators on home game days for basketball under the supervision of a teacher. This week on Wednesday and Thursday, we are hosting home games for our basketball teams. Ravens Game Day Club members are invited to return to TBR at 4:15pm (they must go home in between) to watch the 4:30pm game, and must have a ride organized promptly at 5:30pm as that is when supervision ends. If your child is passionate about school spirit and eager to come cheer on the Ravens, please encourage them to attend the RGDC meeting on Tuesday at Lunch to obtain a permission slip, and once signed, ensure you have a plan in place for a prompt 5:30pm pick up from TBR. Go Ravens!
Spectator Reminders for Basketball
All CBE Middle Schools have set similar expectations for games that promote safety, respect and a positive experience for players, coaches, other spectators and the hosting school. The expectations are as follows:
- Students must return home or be off school property in between the end of the school day at 2:30pm and game start at 4:30pm. There is no supervision at the school provided and students are not able to remain at school in between.
- Players who remain at the school must be under the direct supervision of the coach and not wandering in the school.
- For all away games, students must have their personal parent or guardian accompany them to all games. They may not be supervised by someone who is not their parent/guardian
- For all home games, students must be under the direct supervision of an adult for the entirety of the games. This would be as part of our RGDC or another adult who has agreed to supervise the student.
- There are no in and out privileges for spectators. If you leave the building you should not re-enter
- All visitors must enter our building through the main doors only. Entrance through an alterative door may trigger security protocols and result in significant consequences for students letting others in the school. This would be a significant security risk for everyone in the building.
- Student spectators without parental supervision will be directed by the hosting school administration to leave the building immediately.
- All spectators are expected to cheer and support the players, coaches, referees, etc. in a positive manner.
- Disrespectful behaviour from students or spectators will be addressed by the hosting school administration as well as your home school administration as a follow up. The student code of conduct applies at all times. Spectators may be asked to leave the school depending on the severity of the issue.
- Parents/guardians who bring younger children are responsible for direct supervision at all times. The rest of the school is closed and off limits. Please ensure children are not in the hallways or playing on the stage or with any school equipment.
Thank you for your attention to these. Students have been informed as well today during announcements. We thank you in advance for your ongoing support and look forward to the best year yet for our athletics teams! GO RAVENS!
Our School Survey
TB Riley will be participating in an online school perception survey for students called the OurSCHOOL Student Survey this week. This anonymous survey is completely voluntary for all CBE students.
CBE’s Education Plan prioritizes student voice and well-being in our decision-making processes. Responses from this survey are used at the system and school level to recognize and improve what is necessary for students to feel safe, welcome, and cared for when at school.
Grades 6-12 students provide feedback on depression, self-esteem, and cultural awareness of self
Demographic questions are also asked on this survey for norming purposes. These include general questions regarding age, gender, Indigenous status, immigrant status, home language, grade repeater, reasons for changing schools, disability and/or medical conditions that limits participation in school activities or learning.
If you have questions or would like to request more information please contact Mrs. Austin.
Updating Demographic Information – deadline extended. Please update!
You will have received an email from CBE regarding updating your child’s demographic information in Powerschool. Thirty-five percent of families have not yet completed, and this is a mandatory update. These forms used to be completed via paper copies and now are required to be completed annually online. All parents must review, complete or update their child’s forms through Powerschool by clicking on the School Engage tab.
Thank you for your immediate attention to this if you have not yet updated.
